Find Cumberland County Court Dockets

A docket is the running record of a case, and Cumberland County court dockets are mostly open to the public. To search Cumberland County court dockets, you use the statewide Pennsylvania portal that posts docket sheets for criminal, traffic, magisterial district, and appellate cases. A docket sheet lists every filing, hearing, and order in date order, which makes it the fastest way to track where a case stands. It is not the full case file, and it does not include sealed material. A Cumberland County court docket search costs nothing for the docket itself, though document images and certified copies carry fees set by the county and the courts.

What Is a Court Docket in Cumberland County

A docket is a chronological list of everything that happens in a case. Each line, called a docket entry, marks a filing, an order, a hearing, a continuance, or a disposition. The docket sheet is the public summary of that activity, plus the case metadata: the docket number, the parties, the charges or claims, and the case status. It is the official scoreboard for a case, kept current by the court office.

A docket is not the same as the full case file. The file holds the actual motions, exhibits, and orders, while the docket only tells you they exist and when they were filed. In Cumberland County, Common Pleas dockets carry a CP number, and Magisterial District Court dockets carry an MJ number. The two are linked when a minor-court case is bound over to Common Pleas, so following one case can mean reading two dockets.

How to Find Cumberland County Dockets Online

The main tool is Pennsylvania's UJS Web Portal, which posts docket sheets statewide. It covers Common Pleas criminal cases, Magisterial District Court cases, traffic citations, and appellate matters. Docket sheets are free to view. The portal lets you search by participant name, docket number, citation number, OTN, complaint number, or date filed, and you can filter results to Cumberland County, which is Judicial District 09.

  1. Open the Pennsylvania UJS Case Search portal.
  2. Pick a Search By option, such as Docket Number or Participant Name.
  3. Enter your terms and set the County filter to Cumberland.
  4. Open the docket sheet and read the entries from filing date to disposition.

Note: the portal warns that recent entries may not appear right away, and juvenile, expunged, and limited-access cases may not display at all.

Sample Cumberland County Docket Entry

Each docket entry is a short, dated line. Reading one is simple once you know the parts. The entry date tells you when something happened. The event type names the action, such as a motion, an order, or a hearing notice. The filing party shows who acted. A document icon, where present, means an image can be opened or bought. The table breaks down a typical line.

Courts That Publish Dockets in Cumberland County

Not every court posts dockets the same way. The statewide portal covers most criminal and minor-court activity, while county civil dockets live in the county's own viewer. Knowing which court hears a case tells you where its docket lives.

  • Court of Common Pleas: criminal dockets through UJS; civil dockets through the county OnBase viewer.
  • Magisterial District Courts: traffic, summary, landlord-tenant, and small civil dockets through UJS.
  • Superior and Commonwealth Courts: appellate dockets through UJS appellate search.
  • Orphans' Court and Register of Wills: estate dockets through the county Register's records, not UJS.

Federal cases follow a separate system, covered further down.

Docket vs. Full Case Record

It helps to keep the two ideas apart. A docket is a list of events. A full case record is the stack of documents behind those events. The docket is usually free and online; the documents may cost money or require a visit. Use the docket to track progress, and pull the full record when you need the actual filings.

How to Read a Cumberland County Docket

Dockets use shorthand, but the patterns repeat. A docket number that starts with CP is a Common Pleas case; one that starts with MJ is a Magisterial District Court case. The case caption names the parties, with the Commonwealth listed as the prosecution in criminal cases. Common entries include Information filed, Motion, Order, Continuance, and Sentence.

Disposition is the word that matters most. Guilty, not guilty, dismissed, withdrawn, and nolle prossed each mean something different. A charge is only an accusation; the disposition is the result. If a docket looks short or empty, the case may be juvenile, expunged, limited access, or simply not yet updated. The docket sheet itself warns that it is not a substitute for a Pennsylvania State Police criminal history check.

Cumberland County Docket Number Formats

The docket number tells you a lot before you open the sheet. Each number is built from parts: a court code, a county or office code, a case category, a sequence number, and a year. Once you can read the pieces, you can tell a Common Pleas criminal case from a district court traffic case at a glance.

Common Pleas numbers begin with CP, followed by the county code and a category such as CR for criminal. The UJS help text gives the example CP-25-CR-0009999-2017. Magisterial District Court numbers begin with MJ, followed by the district office and a category like TR for traffic, CR for criminal, or NT for non-traffic. The help text shows MJ-51301-TR-0009999-2017 as a sample. Appellate dockets use their own style, such as 4000 WDA 2017. When a district court case is bound over, the Common Pleas docket links back to the original MJ number.

How Often Cumberland County Dockets Update

The county says online civil and criminal files update daily. Even so, fresh entries can take time to appear. A hearing held this morning may not post to the docket until later in the day or the next business day. The statewide portal carries a standing warning that recent entries made in court offices may not be reflected right away.

That lag matters when a deadline is close. If you are tracking a court date, a bail change, or a payment due date, do not rely on the online docket alone. Call the office that holds the file. The Clerk of Courts handles criminal dockets, and the Prothonotary handles civil dockets.

Note: A docket sheet is public case information, not a certified criminal history, which only the Pennsylvania State Police can provide.

Traffic and Citation Dockets

Traffic cases get their own search path. Most begin in a Magisterial District Court and post to the statewide portal under the citation number. The citation number must include its dash, in a format like A5368532-1. If you do not have the citation, a name plus the Cumberland County filter and a date range can surface the case.

When a traffic case is eligible and public, the fine and court costs can be paid online through the PAePay portal. Limited-access or not-yet-visible cases cannot be paid that way; for those, contact the district court office named on the citation. More detail sits on the traffic court records page.

Federal Dockets for Cumberland County Cases

Federal cases do not appear on the state portal. Cumberland County is in the U.S. Middle District of Pennsylvania, and federal bankruptcy filings are handled by a separate court. Bankruptcy dockets are not the same as county civil judgments, and they are searched in the bankruptcy court's own system.

The bankruptcy court keeps its own site and case access. Visit the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania for filing and docket details.
